Over the last decade, there has been increasing use of transvaginal ultrasound in a wide range of gynecological and obstetric contexts. Only recently, however has transvaginal ultrasound been offered to unselected women with apparently normal pregnancies, either to screen for fetal abnormality or to assess the risk of preterm delivery 2 to 4.
